An automotive starter motor mainly consists of three parts: a DC motor, a transmission mechanism, and a control device.

DC Motor
Function: Converts electrical energy from the battery into mechanical energy, generating electromagnetic torque to power the engine start.
Main components: Include the armature, commutator, magnetic poles, brushes, bearings, and housing. The armature is the core component that generates electromagnetic torque, and the commutator changes the current direction, allowing the armature to continuously rotate.
Transmission Mechanism
Function: When the engine starts, the pinion gear on the starter motor shaft meshes with the flywheel ring gear, transmitting the starter motor's torque to the engine crankshaft; after the engine starts, the starter motor pinion gear automatically disengages from the flywheel ring gear, preventing the engine from driving the starter motor at high speed and damaging it.
Types: Common transmission mechanisms include inertial engagement type, forced engagement type, and armature movement type. Among them, the forced engagement type transmission mechanism is the most widely used, with its advantages of reliable operation and rapid engagement.
Control Device
Function: Used to connect and disconnect the circuit between the motor and the battery, and can also connect and disconnect the additional resistance of the ignition coil.
Main components: Generally consists of an electromagnetic switch. The electromagnetic switch contains an attracting coil and a holding coil. When the ignition switch is turned to the start position, the attracting coil and the holding coil are energized, generating electromagnetic attraction to move the armature, thereby driving the pawl to push the starter pinion gear into the flywheel ring gear and connecting the main circuit to start the starter motor.
